Montana & Shuan - Our Musings

For the preparation for the in-class salon, Montana and I decided to work together. We took the time today to look through all the blogs and selected 2 individuals to read through their experience in this class. We reminisced of all the projects and posts we have done. It was great fun to look back and see all that we've accomplished this semester.

Folk Knowledge

Self-Directed Learning:
Shuan: I looked into the basic definitions of mantic and sophic to better understand what folk knowledge was. My blog post Rinse, Lather, Repeat, was the study I did into hygiene and how the knowledge of hygiene evolved over centuries. I came to an understanding of folk knowledge as the knowledge we learn from observing rather than study.
Montana: I blogged about a number of stories that came from Celtic history which originally weren’t written down. These things really helped to point out what could

Others’ Blogging:
Montana and I took a look into my old blogging buddy, Erin Hamson and her blog “enlightened”.  She taught French braiding. She learned how to drive a manual car. For folk knowledge she had a blog post about Parenting she mentions the knowledge we gain from our parents and even makes a quick list of all of the Learning Outcomes and how we can learn those things within our families.
Blane Harker (thirsting for knowledge) Cooking and making dinner. Traditions of mealtimes. The essentials of food in society.  For his projects, he taught how to crack a bull whip and learned how to take pictures with a quality camera. He also talked about bartering and trading as a type of folk knowledge that he spent some time learning about.

Collaborative learning:
We always tried to make connection about our individual learning when we would talk in class. Lots of our posts in our group were based on others topics, we decided to learn about certain topic because others in our groups brought up things that we wanted to learn about.

Projects/Activities:
Shuan: Taught someone how to knit. Learned how to longboard

Montana: Taught someone how to carve wood. Learned how to put on makeup.

Oral Knowledge

Self-Directed Learning:
Shuan: talked about Chinese and the difference from past Chinese and current Chinese and how the tone system in their language developed.
Montana: Talked about the “talk” that parents have to have with their children about the difference between boys and girls.

Other’s Blogging
Erin: Talked about epic poetry and drama. Talked about the history about the oral knowledge and talked about the Navaho. Posted a lot about king Benjamin’s speech.
Blaine Harker: Talked about music in Greek life in Mycenaean culture.

Collaborative learning:
We learned how as a group to figure out how to recite the speech and we learned that repetition was very important for us to be able to repeat something correctly orally. We also learned that if you are going to recite something orally it helps when someone knows how to recite the whole thing to help you know when you messed up.

Project/Activities:
For the project for Oral knowledge we learned King Benjamin’s speech and recited it as a class. Also we did a video group discussion about the civilizations that we were learning about. Three of us were able to find things about our cultures and two of our group were having a hard time finding anything on their civilization.

Written Knowledge

Self-Directed Learning
Shuan: Connected her learning about the Chinese with the language and her own family life experiences from growing up speaking Chinese
Montana: I spoke about the Japanese and lots of things that I learned about them. How rice helped the society to develop and how the Japanese took their written language from the Chinese. Japan really just got their written language from other civilizations.

Other’s Blogging
Erin: Was learning about the Navajo and Cherokee of north America. Talking about the history of their written languages. Gave transitions between oral and written knowledge and about how her civilizations did this. She makes connections between her music 101 class and the shift of publishers and authors from oral to writing down knowledge.
Blaine: Was assigned the Greek civilization and talked about their writing systems. Talks about his experience with written knowledge and how Provo to San Diego and his experience with maps while doing this.

Collaborative learning
We learned that different civilizations had different mediums for writing things down. We compared the histories between the our civilizations and how they developed the their written knowledge. And how these developments affected the civilizations.

Project/Activities
Rosetta Stone Project is what we did. Shuan and Montana did a bamboo scroll and translated things from a wax tablet onto another bamboo scroll.

Printed Knowledge

Self-Directed Learning:
Shuan: Talked about censorship in china and about their laws. How censorship just makes people want to read the things that are banned. Bamboo scroll and how they print on these.
Montana: Talked about the writing system in Japan and how they converted them into printing and specifically rejected the new printing for wood block printing.

Others Blogging:
Erin: Wrote her annotated bibliography about censorship. Did a lot of research and mentioned Fahrenheit 451. Posted a lot about the work she was doing on her paper.

Blaine: Talked a lot about the bibles and publishers of bibles and how they did this. Paper was on publishers and type settings.

Collaborative learning:
Shuan, Tanner, Brett, and Montana all talked about our papers and gave each other ideas about where to go with them. We also all helped each other figure out how to find things search wise on the annotated Bibliographies.

Projects/Activities
We wrote a paper about the subject that we had chosen in our annotated bibliography. We went to the King James exhibit. We learned from Brother Schowsen about the how printing has changed and specifically about the cover page. Talked a ton about browsing and how stores have been destroyed about browsing.
